In 1813 John James Audubon saw a flock of passenger pigeons that he estimated had one billion, one hundred fifty million, one hundred and thirty six birds ( that's 1, 150, 136,000 birds). A flock in 1850 was estimated to have two billion, two hundred thirty million, two hundred seventy two thousand birds (2, 230, 272,000) They were so thick there would be a hundred nests in a tree -- they would actually break the trees down. The last passenger pigeon died in a Cincinatti zoo September 1, 1914.

My father told me that when he was a little boy in the 1930's flocks of birds would fly over that would blacken the sky. He said you could throw a rock up and hit a bird going up, and hit another on the way down. I have never seen that.

When I was a little girl in Minnesota in the 1950's bluebirds were everywhere. I loved them, they were my favorite bird,
Then, one summer, they were just gone. Years later I read Rachel Carson's book, Silent Spring, and learned that the birds hd been killed by pollution, most specifically, DDT.

You've seen the movies where the old miners would take the canaries in the mines to warn them about poisonous gasses, right? Well, the birds and animals of the earth are our canaries; what happens to them is what is happening to us. Pollution and climate change is killing them, and it is just as surely killing us.
